Dennis Coffey is the shit. The Detroit-born O.G. Funk Brother has had his licks featured on a mind-boggling list of soul/funk/psych songs, including a hefty portion of Motown hits. Courtesy of Mr. Coffey’s site, here’s a bloody good podcast hosted by the man himself as he takes you on an audio trip down his storied career.

Ill symphonics…

There’s a school of thought that considers legendary composer and arranger, David Axelrod one of the progenitors of hip hop. And really, even if you omit Axelrod’s impressively massive discography, who in their right mind would argue with The God Emcee?

Lessons learned during this ShoMerde post: 1. Axelrod is a genius
2. Rakim is hip hop (”from Egypt to Budapest/Rakim is the truest left”)
3. You should hit up Mochilla in the near future to purchase what looks to be a killer concert film.

Os Mutantes: abaixo o poder velho (down with the old power)

Posted: September 28th, 2009 | Author: s-boogie | Filed under: General, Props and Praise, ShoMerde Print | No Comments »

On Friday October 2nd, all of you able-bodied peeps purchase your boarding passes for a cultural revolution - brasilian style. Founding frontman Sergio Baptista Dias and the latest incarnation of his mythical trio Os Mutantes make an appearance for the ages at the illustrious Opera House. During the years after a successful military coup, Os Mutantes proved to be a nexus point of artistic and political commentary expressed in a vividly sardonic style that saw itself often duplicated not only in Brazil, but around the world.

Here’s a couple of spectacular vids demonstrating their M.O.: A terrific blend of North American pop/rock/psyche and soul colliding with Brasilian samba and bossa nova. The style begat an entire movement called Tropicalia that shook the ruling Military junta enough to exile and imprison some of the participants.

Plus a recent interview with the legendary Sergio Dias compliments of Liar Films

They have a new album out called Haih…ou Amortecedor… and you can scoop it here.

Nardwuar vs. Nas

Yo, Big ups to Nardwuar the Human Serviette who has been killing the interview tip for a hot minute. Most of us Canadian peeps should know the man from his dayz on the Nation’s former Music Station, and Nardwuar’s interviewed damn near everybody who’s anybody. He’s got that fantastically irritating style that’s hard to dismiss because the Man knows his shit. Here’s a perfect example with Queensbridge’s son Nasty Nas. Doot Doola Doot Doo..

Boogie Wonderland Revisited

Lately I’ve become completely obsessed with Boogie. Over the last couple of years 95(ish) bpm, thick basslines and synth stabs have become as necessary as cereal in the morning for these post millenial times. For some of the finer examples look here. or here, and, please for the love of god, make sure you peep this (it’s catalist approved!)… But if we’re talking about something more contemporary, well then y’all got to be on the lookout for this dude… His name’s DaM Funk (pronounced Dame) and he’s an ambassador from a boogie wonderland, where the jerri curls run thick with juice and people pimp rides out with proper systems, and oh yeah, roller-skates…

here’s a dope interview where he reps the boogie truth:

And next we get down with him, in “da studio”.
