Before you check out our lil ol’ interview with Lee Fields and Leon Michels lemme throw a some background 411 at you:
Lee Fields is a straight up soul survivor. With over 20 releases to his name, Lee began singing in church in his hometown of Wilson, North Carolina. After playing college circuits for a few years, Fields released his first 7″ on London records and has never looked back.
Leon Michels youthful looks underscore his musical sophistication. A veteran producer saxophonist and organist, Michels has worked in sessions ranging from Amy Winehouse to Sharon Jones as well as a host of bands reknown for bringing da funk. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; Michels, with his partner Jeff Silverman own Truth & Soul Records a powerhouse of classic funk and soul aesthetic mixed with modern production and perhaps best exemplified by his namesake group The El Michels Affair.
Ya Heard?! We’re comin’ at cha full blast as we rep that classic ish in our tete a tete with Evil D and Buckshot from the seminal hip hop group BlackMoon. And it goes a lil sumthin like this:
Humongous Props to REMG(Ramos interview here!) for coming through, and apologies to Andrej for the misspelt name.
Bringing you that ill satisfaction, Buckshot and Evil D break it down like the rap dictionary. And for all you sucka duck rhyme types out there: *gasface*
As usual the Brits are two and a half steps ahead of the game when it comes to reppin’ Classic American Soul talent. Presented here in two parts is an ill interview with Gil Scott Heron
Mrs.Moreno cuts loose and takes no prisoners, searing the record industry and the ‘general dullness’ happening in the artistic communities.. Amazing…and if you missed it here’s part one. ShoMerde rockin’ it like Kojak: Who loves ya baby?
It’s a beautiful warm summer night in downtown Toronto during the city’s annual Downtown Jazz Fest. The taps are open late and patio’s everywhere teem with music afficianado’s galore. Looking for the good stuff? Search no further true believer, ShoMerde.com’s NunoGee (with a smile the size of Montreal) serves it up with a dynomite interview with Brazilian legend Joyce Moreno. When she wasn’t dazzling us with her wit and philosophy, she was burning up the stage with a quartet versed in sunshine soul. Enjoy part one.
Many thanks to Downtown Jazz, Supermarket, Joyce Moreno and band and the usual ShoMerde crew.
Join us this Saturday, August 8 at the Embassy, 223 Augusta, as the usual gang of musical miscreants are joined by none other than Version Xcursion founder, and SystemEcho main man Sassa’Le. Shaking down the house with bass heavy dub, trip hop, drum and bass and whatever else pops out of the bag, this one’s sure to put some flames on the charcoal. Check out some hits from his current compendium “Az It Waz” 1988-98 Back In the Way Vol.1, a reminder of headier times and a cue on things to come …
In an era where the one true U.S. artform is much maligned, the mighty Mos kicks it with a trio of that rarest of breed, the bad-ass young American jazz musician: Robert Glasper on keys, Chris “Daddy” Dave (please do yerself a favour and check the tunes on his myspace page…) on the kit and Jon Jon Web playing bass.
